Day 42

Writing is a skill. In here I send notes of my writing from the 50 days of writing course by David Perell, to reflect, develop and build my writing style.

In the 42nd email from the 50 days of writing, David Perell talks about the Public To Private Bridge.

In this mail, David talks about why we must have an audience where you can connect directly. What he means is an email list, a personal group, community. In order to get here, you need to take advantage of the open platforms such as YouTube, Twitter and Instagram.

In the writing sphere, James Clear grew his audience on the back of Google search’s public platform but converted 900,000 of those readers into email subscribers who he can now contact directly. Fueled by those direct relationships, his book Atomic Habits climbed to the #1 spot on the New York Times Bestseller List.

Instagram, YouTube, and James Clear all succeeded by riding the wave of an open platform. It’s like crossing a bridge. Users find you on public platforms and become a part of your audience once they cross the bridge and land on your private communication channels.

Finally, David states that we must start by attracting attention on public platforms such as Twitter and YouTube. Then, help our audience cross the bridge onto our private platforms so we can store value in a list of contacts. Only then do you have an audience.

My thoughts:

Having our own audience is absolutely necessary. Especially in the coming future we will see more of the community driven payments, works and culture more with the advancement in technology and our mindset.

Community driven knowledge has been there for a long time. I remember when I was little, we used to have one dance club in each area and one music club. Everyone who wanted to learn used to come there thrice weekly and engage in activities accordingly. The whole club is run by the people attending and it is sort of the similar way now but it is digital. Building an audience can be learnt from James Clear, he has grown tremendously just by deciding to write every Monday and Thursday. And, in three years he had over 500,000 contacts who read his articles. This kind of gave an advantage when he published his book 'Atomic Habits'.

Now, since everything is digital, trusting open platform will give you an audience is not believable. Hence, asking the reach of the audience you get in open platforms to come join in a private platform is intended to have a direct communication.

Thank you for reading.
